Tools and Materials Needed:

- Spudger or plastic opening tool
- Tweezers
- Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) – for loosening adhesive
- Adhesive remover (optional) – for battery adhesive

Power Off and Unplug Your MacBook

Remove the Bottom Case
Use the Pentalobe screwdriver (P5) to remove the screws securing the bottom case. Throughout this repair, keep track of each screw and make sure it goes back exactly where it came from to avoid damaging your device. Apply a suction handle to the lower case near the front-center area of the MacBook Pro.
Disconnect the Battery
Use a plastic spudger to disconnect the battery connector from the logic board to avoid any electrical damage during the process. Carefully peel up the large piece of tape covering the battery connector, on the edge of the logic board nearest the battery.
Remove the Trackpad Cable
Use a spudger to disconnect the trackpad ribbon cable by gently prying its connector straight up from the logic board. The trackpad cable runs over the battery and needs to be disconnected. Carefully apply the solution around the edges of the battery cells and wait a few minutes for it to penetrate the adhesive.
Remove the Battery
Press all along the edge of the tape with your spudger to stick it securely to the MacBook Pro’s aluminum case, sealing off the speaker from the battery. Gently use a plastic spudger or opening tool to lift the battery cells one by one. Start from the edges and work slowly to avoid bending or puncturing the battery cells. Continue applying adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol as needed to help release the adhesive. If you have difficulty getting the card underneath any of the battery cells, try working a piece of floss or wire underneath the battery cell.
Pull it side-to-side in a sawing motion to separate the adhesive. Leave your plastic card in place temporarily to prevent the left-side battery cells from re-adhering. Slide the corner of one of your plastic cards underneath the top edge of one of the cells and then work it underneath the other cell. Scrape away any remaining chunks of adhesive with a plastic tool, and clean the underlying areas with adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol.
Install the New Battery
If your battery came with adhesive pre-installed on the bottom, flip it over and carefully peel away the liner to expose the adhesive. If your battery did not come with adhesive, apply a thin double-sided adhesive tape and If the new battery does not come with adhesive, use adhesive strips to secure it in place.
After replacing the battery, it’s a good idea to calibrate it by fully charging the MacBook, then using it until the battery is completely drained, followed by a full recharge.
