MacBook Motherboard Repair – Fixing Shorted Coils & IC Issues | Reformtech

When troubleshooting a MacBook Pro motherboard issue, the first step is to connect the DC boot cable and check the impedance. Upon connecting the DC cable, we observed that it converted 5V to 20V, but no current was being drawn—indicating a possible short circuit inside the board.

1. Checking Voltage Fluctuations
   • After opening the motherboard, we noticed that the MPS values were fluctuating constantly, confirming an issue within the circuit.
   • Further testing revealed that two 2.5V coils were shorted to the ground.
2. Identifying the Faulty Components
   • The coils in question (PP 2.5V NAND) play a crucial role in power distribution.
   • Using a multimeter, we checked for grounding issues and traced the short to the RCR U9500 component.
   • This IC generates 2.5V for NAND storage, and we found that it was burned at the corner, indicating an internal short circuit.
3. Confirming the IC Failure
   • When applying DC supply, the voltage converted from 5V to 20V, but the system was not booting.
   • Further investigation revealed that the VGA Ball IC was shorted to the ground and needed replacement.

Solution & Repair Process:

• Since the short was detected inside the IC, we proceeded with an IC replacement.
• The affected coils (L9581 & L9500) were removed, and the faulty IC was replaced with a new one.
• Once the new IC was installed, the motherboard was reassembled, and the DC supply was reconnected.

Final Testing & Successful Repair:

• After powering on the system, the voltage successfully converted from 5V to 20V, and the MacBook display was restored.
