MacBook Pro – No Power Issue Repair
If your MacBook Pro doesn’t seem to turn on after you press the power button, Make sure that your power cable is undamaged and plugged securely into your Mac and a working electrical outlet.

First Steps:
We connected a charger to the MacBook Pro and noted that the meter displayed 5V and a current of only 20mA. Pressing the power button yielded no response. Given the symptoms, we proceeded to open the device for further inspection.
Internal Inspection & Measurements:
opening the laptop, it was evident that someone had worked on it previously. Checking various components, we found that certain capacitors measured around 6 ohms, which raised concerns about a possible short circuit. The battery was plugged in, but there was no voltage present on the main power rail (PPV_BAT).
We obtained the board schematic and board view from our Discord repair group, which allowed us to pinpoint the suspected faulty areas. The PPV_BAT rail, which should measure around 13V, showed no voltage, confirming a deeper issue.
Power Injection & Thermal Inspection:
Connecting an external power supply and applying voltage resulted in a current draw of 2A, yet no heat signature was detected on the suspected chip. Raising the voltage momentarily showed increased current draw, but no component visibly heated up.
To isolate the issue, we removed the suspected power management chip, but the short remained. Further inspection revealed a capacitor in the power circuit that had exploded, likely causing the failure.
Faulty Component & Burnt PCB Trace:
After removing the capacitor, the short persisted, indicating a deeper issue. Closer examination revealed a burnt PCB layer, which meant that the issue extended beyond a simple capacitor replacement. The damage to the board suggested a burnt internal trace, a more complex issue to repair.
Board Repair Process:
To address the problem, we carefully cut the burnt trace to isolate the fault. The repair involved:
- Removing the damaged capacitor and cleaning the area.
- Testing for further shorts and confirming power rail integrity.
- Replacing the capacitor with an equivalent rated at 13V or higher.
- Soldering back the power management chip.
- Reassembling the board and conducting final power tests.
Final Testing & Confirmation:
Once reassembled, we connected the charger. The device immediately responded, showing 20V input and gradually increasing current consumption (200mA, 300mA, 500mA). Shortly after, the screen powered on, confirming the repair was successful. The battery was not initially connected, but further assembly and testing confirmed that the laptop was charging properly and drawing 19.2V at 3.9A, indicating full power functionality.
Conclusion:
This repair required extensive troubleshooting, including identifying a hidden short caused by a burnt PCB trace. Given the difficulty of accessing the MacBook Pro logic board and the delicate nature of board-level repairs, it is understandable why Apple quoted £600 for this repair. However, with expertise and proper tools, we successfully restored the MacBook Pro at a more reasonable cost for the customer.
Final Note:
Board-level repairs like these take considerable time, especially disassembling and reassembling the device. We appreciate your patience and support! If you found this repair helpful, be sure to like, subscribe, and stay tuned for more repair insights!
