Step-by-Step Diagnosis
To identify the issue, we started by removing the screen and checking the internal components. The first step was plugging in the AC power cable to observe the motherboard’s response. We noticed that the first LED light turned on, confirming that the power supply was receiving voltage.
When we attempted to turn on the iMac, the second LED light came on, indicating that the computer was powered on. We also heard the startup chime, and the fan started spinning, showing initial signs of life. However, upon closer inspection, we found that the third and fourth LED lights were off.
Understanding the LED Indicators:
✔️ First Light: Confirms power supply is working.
✔️ Second Light: Indicates the system is powered on.
❌ Third Light (Off): Suggests a potential GPU (graphics card) failure since this LED confirms communication between the GPU and the motherboard.
❌ Fourth Light (Off): This is expected, as the display was disconnected during the test. If it remains off after reconnecting the screen, the issue could be with the display or LVDS cable.
Possible Solutions
Since the third LED light is off, we strongly suspect a failing GPU, aligning with the customer’s issue of intermittent power failures. However, before confirming the logic board replacement, we will first replace the PRAM battery located on the back of the motherboard. A weak PRAM battery can sometimes cause startup failures, and we always rule out simpler fixes before moving to more expensive repairs.
Tomorrow, we will replace the battery and run further tests. If the third light remains off, we will proceed with a logic board replacement to restore full functionality.
